Dev update 3

Hey everyone! 👋

I'm absolutely thrilled to announce the release of Engine Sound Lab v1.6.1 — a massive update that brings professional‑grade automotive audio straight to your browser.

Whether you're a game developer looking for realistic vehicle SFX, a car enthusiast who wants to build their dream engine config, or just someone who loves high‑revving V8s, this update is for you.

What's New in v1.6.1?

I've taken the Standard (Free) edition and supercharged it with the core engine improvements from the premium branch. Here's the full changelog:

1. Throttle Mode Toggle – Slider or Hold

You now have two ways to control the throttle:

  • Slider: Classic continuous control (drag to hold RPM).
  • Hold: True push‑to‑rev. Press the big button (or the W key) to instantly hit 100% throttle, release to drop back to idle. Perfect for heel‑toe downshifts and quick blips!

2. Launch Control System

Set your desired launch RPM (2,000 – 7,000) and hit the Launch button. The engine will hold that RPM perfectly, even with the pedal to the floor. Dump the clutch (release the button) and feel the power!

3. 0‑60 / 0‑100 km/h Timer

Switch to Drive mode and floor it. The simulator now automatically times your 0‑60 mph sprint. The time appears live in the info panel. Finally, a way to test your tuning setups against real‑world performance!

4. Real‑Time Spectrum Analyzer

You can now see your engine sound. A live frequency spectrum sits right next to the gauge, giving you visual feedback on how your tuning (Harmonic Density, Exhaust Resonance, etc.) affects the audio signal.

5. Valve Train Noise (Mechanical Clatter)

Add realistic lifter and valve clatter that scales with RPM. This gives V8s that lumpy cam character and adds incredible depth to high‑revving engines.

6. Transmission Whine

Straight‑cut gear whine that scales with road speed. Turn this up for that hardcore race‑car / rally‑car vibe.

7. Master Saturation (Tube Overdrive)

A new wave‑shaper on the master output. Adds warm, analog tube‑style saturation to the entire mix. Makes everything sound thicker and more expensive.

8. Exhaust Valves Toggle

Open>span class=""> = aggressive, loud, unrestricted. Closed = muffled, deep, and refined.

9. Glass‑Morphism UI

The entire interface has been given a premium facelift with frosted glass backgrounds, refined shadows, and adaptive gauge colors. It looks and feels like a high‑end automotive HUD.

Standard vs. Ultimate – What's the difference?

Standard (v1.6.1) – COMPLETELY FREE

This is the fully open‑source version included in this download. It features:

  • 16 Core Engine Configs (I3, I4, V6, V8, V10, V12, Turbo, Supercharged variants...)
  • All new features listed above (Launch Control, 0‑60, Hold Throttle, etc.)
  • Full real‑time tuning panel
  • 4‑Oscillator sound engine with rumble sub
  • No watermarks, no ads, no paywalls.

Ultimate (Paid Supporter Edition)

If you enjoy the Standard version and want to support the project (and get your hands on the exclusive content), the Ultimate Edition adds:

  • 14 Iconic Car Presets (Bugatti W16 Quad‑Turbo, F1 V10 TT, Lamborghini V12 NA, Nissan GT‑R, Toyota Supra MKIV, Subaru WRX STI, Dodge Demon 170, and more!)
  • Exclusive Engine Types (Rotary 13B/20B, V16, W16, and the Hellcat V8).
  • Adaptive Gauge Colors (Red for Ferrari, Yellow for Dodge, Blue for Subaru, etc.)
  • Per‑Car Drivetrain (Realistic gear ratios, final drive, and tire sizes for every preset).
  • Commercial Use License – Use the sounds in your YouTube videos, indie games, or podcasts without royalties.

Why the $9.99 Price Tag?

I know $9.99 feels different from the usual $5 "impulse buy", so let me explain exactly what you're getting.

This is a professional audio tool built on a custom DSP engine with 4 oscillators, real‑time filtering, and a signal chain that rivals desktop plugins. Every preset in the Ultimate edition has been meticulously tuned to match the real‑world character of each car.

Here's what you're actually paying for:

  • 14 ready‑to‑use car presets – that's less than $0.72 per car. A single high‑quality engine sound library on Splice or Audio jungle costs $15–$30 per car.
  • Commercial use rights – use the sounds in your games, videos, or streams without worrying about copyright claims.
  • Lifetime updates – you get every future version (v1.7, v1.8, etc.) for free.
  • Supporter access – you're directly funding the development of new features (custom gearboxes, audio export, and more).

At $9.99, I'm pricing this at the **bottom end** of professional audio tools. Compare that to a single Serum preset pack ($30), a Kontakt library ($50+), or a single month of a Splice subscription ($8) – and you get a standalone, royalty‑free, fully interactive audio workstation that works entirely offline in your browser.

Standard is free. Ultimate is for those who see the value. 🏁

The Technical Side (For the Gearheads)

Under the hood, v1.6.1 represents a complete overhaul of the audio graph:

  • 4 Sawtooth Oscillators with detune spread for organic thickness.
  • Rumble Sub (sine wave at 0.25x firing frequency) for deep bass response.
  • Dynamic Main Filter with Resonance controlled by RPM, Load, and the new Cam Profile slider.
  • Parallel Processing: Exhaust branch and Intake branch run in parallel with independent resonance controls.
  • Live Spectrum Analysis via Web Audio API (FFT size 128).

All of this runs in real‑time on a single thread using vanilla JavaScript and the Web Audio API — no plugins, no installs, just open the HTML file and go.

How to Play

  1. Download the HTML file below.
  2. Open it in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.
  3. Click the Start button (or just click the engine block).
  4. Select an engine (I4, V8, V12, etc.).
  5. Switch between Slider and Hold throttle modes to find your style.
  6. Switch to Drive mode and hit the Launch button for a standing start!
  7. Tweak the sliders in the right panel to shape the sound to your liking.

Pro Tip: Map the engine block to a controller using JoyToKey or x360ce for an even more immersive experience!

What's Next? (v1.7 Roadmap)

I'm already working on the next major update:

  • Export Audio — Save your engine sound as a WAV file.
  • Custom Gearbox Editor — Define your own gear ratios.
  • Turbo Blow‑off Valve Animation — Visual effects to match the audio.
  • Mobile Touch Optimization — Better thumb controls for on‑the‑go tuning.

Final Thoughts

This project started as a small experiment to synthesise car sounds in the browser, and it has grown into something I'm genuinely proud of. It's my love letter to cars, audio engineering, and interactive web design.

Whether you download the free Standard version or grab the Ultimate Supporter Pack, thank you for checking out my work!

If you enjoy it, please leave a rating, write a review, or share it with your car‑loving friends. Every bit of feedback fuels the development cycle.

  • [ STANDARD (FREE) v1.6.1] – Full featured, zero cost, open source.
  • [BUY ULTIMATE EDITION – $9.99] – 14 exclusive presets + commercial license + lifetime updates.

Drive fast, tune deep.
